Yesterday Bill Grady and I launched our kayaks at 6:00am on the south side of Sebastian Inlet. My first fishing trip out since the DOA tournament in Stewart, Florida.
Bill is the best fly tyer I know and is second to none in sight fishing. There is no better way to improve your skills than to fish with someone better than yourself. He caught the first fish of the day, a 4lb. Bluefish that put a serious bend in his rod. After that excitement, I followed with a 6lb. Jack on a Spook Jr.
In the afternoon, we drifted onto a shallow grassy area loaded with Black Drum and Sheepshead. The grass was super thick and the fish were skittish. We were unable to get a hookup. Just as we were leaving the flat, a large Permit started tailing along the edges. Bill got two shots at him before the Permit decided to go elsewhere where he would not have to deal with the likes of us.
The afternoon became very windy and that made the end of the eight mile kayak trip quite a challenge. Then the rains came. I am feeling the challenge in my muscles today, but always worth the pain after a great day of fishing.
